Right in the thick of it, not just on the sidelines, at the 2026 Sechseläuten in Zurich
The Sechseläuten is one of Zurich’s most famous events and attracts thousands of visitors every year. When the Böögg is set ablaze, a unique blend of tradition, emotion, and energy unfolds—the perfect setting for striking drone footage and aerial event photography.
As a drone team, we had the opportunity this year to produce the live TV drone footage for Zurich’s Sechseläuten festival. Our goal was clear: not just to provide footage, but to show the event from a perspective that is rarely possible, one that no one has ever seen before—directly above the action and right in the middle of the crowds.
The complexity of this drone operation became apparent even during the planning phase. In close collaboration with the client, the city police, and other partners—including the police helicopter—the entire airspace was planned in detail. During the event, the helicopter remained in the air at all times, which required precise coordination of all flight movements.
Thanks to our SORA operating permit, we were able to fly the drones directly and safely over crowds—one of the key requirements for high-quality aerial photography at large-scale events. A SORA permit demonstrates compliance with the highest safety and quality standards for authorized flights in such scenarios.
On site, the event presented additional challenges. Thick smoke from the fire significantly reduced visibility and required maximum concentration when flying the drone. At the same time, unauthorized drones occasionally entered the airspace, increasing the risk of collisions and requiring a quick response.
Coordination with the live production team and the event program also took place simultaneously. Noise, fireworks, and unexpected developments are all part of the Sechseläuten festival and make every drone mission dynamic and challenging. Added to this was the intense heat from the fire, which was clearly felt even from a safe distance and had to be factored into flight planning.
Special attention was also paid to the horses and the large crowds. Professional drone flights at events require not only technical expertise, but also tact and experience in handling sensitive situations.
An important part of our operation was our spotter, who constantly monitored the airspace. In addition to visual observation, we also used digital tools and applications to detect other drones and air traffic participants early on and ensure safety at all times.
Projects like these are a team effort. From planning and coordination to on-site execution, a well-coordinated drone team works hand in hand to deliver high-quality results, even under challenging conditions.
The result is aerial photography that goes far beyond traditional event photography. Images that not only show what’s happening, but also convey the feeling of truly being right in the middle of it all.
